About Me

Possum Point

This is the D3100 with the Sigma 150-500 mounted.

I’m Hugh M.  Vandervoort, age 70, and I live in Annapolis, MD.

I’m retired, and have worked in government, Insurance, auto mechanics, construction, computer repair and other miscellaneous fields. I was never truly comfortable working for anyone but myself.

I supplement my retirement income with odd jobs and computer repair. I came to computers in the ’70s when I took a Fortran course at Towson University and discovered an affinity for these logical machines. Nowadays I do a lot of spyware removal, hardware replacements, setup and tutoring. The only difference between me and other computer users is that I’m willing to read the manual or look it up on Google.

I’ve always liked the outdoors, and have enjoyed bird watching for many years, although I’ve never made a serious study of it.
I’m currently equipped with a Nikon D3200, a Nikon D7100, a Nikkor 70-300 zoom and a Sigma 150-500. I also use the Nikkor 18-55mm with extension tube (12mm) and the Raynox 250 for macro work. A TTL flash is helpful as well.

  1. I did ask on AABC but thought I would come here and see the rest of you pictures. You are particularly good at this. I love photographing birds also. I was hoping you would have listed on here what you use. I cannot really tell from the pic. I am looking to upgrade and yours sure does do well. Love the clarity! Of course I know at lot of it is your know how. Also might be interested in you tutoring me on the computer. I do not retain well and get lost when trying to read manuals and such.Thank you for sharing your expertise with us. Linda

  2. Hi Hugh, great pictures! I enjoyed going through them. Hopefully you will keep on posting more in the future. Thanks, Tanja

  3. Hugh- I am very jealous you are retired and get to bird daily. I myself seem to only get out on weekends with my dogs. And I have a cheapo camera so my pictures are limited, but I still enjoy taking them. Your pictures are amazing.

Nice to have seen you at Wooten’s on May 4th. May check out Truxton this weekend perhaps.

  4. Hugh- Do you recommend any specific area of Truxton? I’ve never been (live in Baltimore County) and the place seems huge on a map.

    Thanks!
    Nikki

  5. Hugh,
I really enjoyed your format and photos. I will check back again to see your latest shots. I am trying to do the same and accruing bird photos like you.

  6. Hello,

I work for US Fish and Wildlife Service out of Stewart B. Mckinney NWR in Westbrook, CT. We are currently making an updated leaflet for one of our units. We’re interested in using a photo of your hooded mergansers for this publication. You will be accredited with your name attached to the photo.

Please respond to the attached email if you are interested in giving us permission to use your work.

    Thank you

    • Did this leaflet get printed? If so, may I have a copy?
      Thank you.

  7. Hugh, Your comment about reading the manual was great. haha. I am now getting really frustrated when I try and get a manual and I can only get it online. I have resorted to going to the store and using the ” help a poor little old lady”.. Here in KY it does work and often they will print out the manual for me. All 150 pages. When I am in Annapolis one day we can go out and “bird”.. Of course my camera of choice now is my Samsung Smart phone :-). Can we still take pictures. I have taken the liberty of copying a couple of your photos (blue birds and a pair of wood ducks) with the idea of doing a water color. Don’t feel it will be a copyright infringement as I am absolutely positive that you will NOT recognize the painting as coming from one of your photos. Your pictures are grat and I really enjoy looking at them. Bea
