Wood Ducks at Quiet Waters

We got very nice weather again today. A little cold, but plenty of sunshine. I went back to Quiet Waters to try my luck again, and had a very reasonable day. I spent about three hours in the morning, and another two hours this afternoon. I also got to talk to a couple of good birders and compare notes for future expeditions.

The Common Loon is one of my favorites. Sleek, attractive and all business.

These Lesser Scaup should have moved to a breeding ground by now.

Look in the air anywhere in Quiet Waters and you may see an Osprey.

  1. They nest in a tree??is the hole already there and they just move I. Or do,they set it up?

  2. They move into existing cavities. This is probably an old Pileated Woodpecker nest.
Cornell:”The Wood Duck is one of the most stunningly pretty of all waterfowl. Males are iridescent chestnut and green, with ornate patterns on nearly every feather; the elegant females have a distinctive profile and delicate white pattern around the eye. These birds live in wooded swamps, where they nest in holes in trees or in nest boxes put up around lake margins. They are one of the few duck species equipped with strong claws that can grip bark and perch on branches.”
