Common Goldeneye at Thomas Point

My foot is just about recovered, but another day or two of taking it easy seems prudent.
I went back to Thomas Point to minimize the walking, and it was OK, but not as good as yesterday.
I made a quick tour of Quiet Waters, but too much ice kept the duck population to a minimum.
A Fox provided a nice end to the day.

Lesser Scaup

Lesser Scaup are still the most common duck.

Red Breasted Merganser

This Fox was walking along the road as I left.

Black Scoter at Thomas Point

I’m still hobbling a bit, so I made a quick trip to Jonas Green, then to Thomas Point where I don’t need to walk so much.
It turned out to be a good choice, as the light was OK, the wind very light, and plenty of ducks in sight.
I took a lot of photos, so I’ll be adding some more pics when I get time to finish processing them.
Turn up the volume to hear the duck serenade.

Lesser Scaup

There were hundreds of ducks at the point.

Cornell:
“A coastal duck that breeds in the subarctic, the Black Scoter is not well studied in North America. Only a few nests have ever been found.”
A first for me.

Another lone Horned Grebe.

Although my sprain is getting better, I’m not ready for extensive walking yet, so I went back to Thomas Point where the birds come to you. It was windy and cold, so I didn’t stay as long as yesterday.

Although Canvasbacks are around in some numbers, the Lesser Scaup continues as the dominant duck.

My first Horned Grebe of the season.

Horned Grebe at Thomas Point

My sprain is steadily improving, but I’m not ready for any extensive walks yet, so I went back to Thomas Point where the birds come to you with little effort.
The wind was 10 knots or more out of the North so I didn’t stay long, and bought a warmer pair of gloves on the way home.

Hooded Mergansers at Thomas Point

I had to work early this morning, and nearly called off birding due to the cold weather. I’ve been cooped up too long with my sprain, so I decided to give Thomas Point a try and it worked out well.
Bright sunshine and near zero wind made the cold bearable, and a few of the many ducks came in close enough for some decent images.
I’ve been processing images for three hours, so I’ll just post what I have and insert some IDs later.

Northern Flicker at Wooton’s Landing

The prediction was for cold and cloudy, but it was only moderately cold, and the sky was more clear than cloudy.
I went to Wooton just to change my luck, and it wasn’t great except for a very cooperative Northern Flicker.
